Today is all about the men! I know this trend list has been a bit lacking in telling you what the hottest trends are for Fall for men, so I am going to try to make up for that a bit. One of the hottest trends for Fall is velvet clothing for men! This trend is actually more of an essential than a trend. If you are a man who loves to dress to impress, then this trend is most definitely for you. Velvet is a classic fabric that can feel dated in some pieces of clothing but can come off absolutely timeless in others. To get the timeless sexy feel that every man is after, go for velvet clothing for men that is in classic cuts.

Velvet clothing for men needs to be more than a bow tie or lapels on a suit (though these velvet accents fit in nicely with the trend), make velvet more of a statement piece for you this season! If you are a little nervous how this will work, start with velvet clothing in popular Fall colors–like a charcoal gray velvet sportcoat or a navy blue velvet vest–to add velvet pieces to your wardrobe. Velvet is also a very versatile so it can easily be mixed with other popular Fall fabrics such as cashmere, wool, silk, and gabardine. Though the goal is to go for the piece de resistance, a full velvet suit. I personally would love to see a man wear the purple velvet suit from the runway of Paul Smith for Fall/Winter 2010!

Fall 2010 Fashion Trend #5: Camel Coats for Women

With a slight chill peppering the evenings, the timeless camel coat for women is a perfect choice!

This has been a hot trend since Fall 2009 and is not likely to go anywhere anytime soon! Chic camel coats for women is just a play off of the classic camel coats for men that can be worn three seasons out of the year. For Fall/Spring camel coats, go for 2-ply cashmere or cashmere and summer wool blends. These types of camel coats for women should be substantial but lightweight as compared to a true winter coat. Also go for Fall/Spring camel coats with plenty of architectural or tailoring detail.

Now for Winter camel coats for women, stick to long sleek lines and a heavier cashmere or cashmere and wool blend with a silk lining. All of these fabrics will help to keep heat inside the coat. Also, look for more classic styles and details, such as gold buttons, plaques and vented pleats, when shopping for Winter camel coats for women. The goal with this style is to keep the coat for 20 years and no one ever know it!

Fall 2010 Fashion Trend #6: Knee High Socks

Flashback to elementary or middle school and I am sure you have a few memories of those knee high socks that all of our mothers made us wear. Horrifying right? Wrong! For Fall, knee high socks have been revamped and refined to become one of the hottest trends of the season!

That’s right ladies, the flirty and cute knee high socks of private school girls from the days of yore are back with a vengeance! To really work this fashion trend, go for knee high socks that end just below the knee to create the illusion of longer slimmer legs. Go for knee high socks and even thigh high socks in fine materials such as fine knit, cashmere and silk blends. A shorter hemline (say NO to plaid skirts, the school girl look is a bit out of anyone’s league over 18!) paired with knee high socks is key. If you are still a bit nervous about this trend, try dark colors of knee high socks or layering knee high socks over sheer hosiery which will give you a chic look. Lastly, don’t forget the heels! High-heeled Mary Janes or more traditional styled pumps will really help you pull off this trend!

Lesson Learned? Dark colored, fine knit knee high socks either layered over sheer hosiery or alone paired with shorter hemlines and heels is a win-win situation for any woman!

The Pre-Fall Trend of the blouse has been taken one step further with the buttoned-up shirt collar trend. Modesty, sophistication and an understated aire of confidence is key for this flash back turn of the century (last century that is!) trend that can be adopted to be chic, cool, sexy or glam with just a bit of imagination!

If you want to go more for executive chic with this trend, pair a silk chiffon buttoned-up shirt collar piece with a pair of dark fine wool high-waist sailor pants and 4″ heel pumps for a look that is very visually impactful yet leaves the wearer completely covered. So you say you want to “sex up” the trend a little more? Then pair a mini shirt or hot pants with a buttoned-up shirt collar to have a vamp meets sophisticate look that can be pulled off with the right pair of sandals or heels. Avoid flats at all costs if you wish to go this route. Lastly, if you want to work this trend with little thought to the ensemble and still look good, try buttoned-up shirt collar shirt dresses that will give you the sophistication of the buttoned-up collar with the ease and convenience of a dress. Since pieces with buttoned-up shirt collars present such a blank canvas (kind of like wearing jeans) you can pair with many different pieces to change the effect of the outfit.

Pairing with over-the-knee boots will make your style edgy yet tamed; pairing with leather pieces (such as vests and pants)will give you a very modern starkly beautiful look; or mix other fabulous textures and materials (like velvet, silk, and lace) to gear the buttoned-up shirt collars to embrace other trends. The bottom line is You absolutely can’t go wrong with this trend!

Fall 2010 Fashion Trend #8: Leather

You may be wondering how I pulled this one out of the hat as a fashion trend for Fall, but leather is making a debut in brand new ways in the upcoming season as a true fashion trend.

Leather is going far beyond the belts and bags found in most fashionistas closets to the realm of tops, leggings, capes, vests, and yes even underwear. From aviation-inspired (like the full leather jumpsuit seen on the runway of Hermes) to bondage-esque (like the corsets spotted on the Yves-Saint Laurent runway), leather is king for fall. This trend works best when you choose a monochromatic color combination of leather pieces in earth tones and neutrals.

Black is a safe and classic choice especially if embracing some of the trend’s more daring pieces, such as leather hotpants, leather leggings, and leather underwear. If you want a softer, look even if you choose to wear head to toe leather, stick with worn or vintage leather in a soft palette to give you a less intimidating and more classic versus fetish/rocker look. Be on the look out for the emergence of grey leather pieces.

Lesson Learned? Leather is back in a new way in head-to-toe pieces this Fall and can be interpreted in everything from classic vintage to fetish to rocker. The use of color in earth tones or black will greatly determine the impact of your leather clothing options.

Yes, I am talking about showing off your unmentionables to the world, only in the most tasteful and classy of ways of course! For the lingerie as outerwear trend, you want to look for camisoles and slips for tops and dresses and suspenders and stay-ups for pants. You can layer these pieces with chunkier pieces such as cashmere sweaters, blazers, and over-the-knee boots. If you want to be slightly demure while showing off your underwear then stick to uniform palettes of blacks, navies, and browns. From the iconic Jackie O to the hit show Mad Men, the ladylike long fuller skirts and feminine silhouettes of the late 50’s and early 60’s are back with a vengeance this fall.

I know, I know, many of you may perceive ladylike to mean stiff and too formal. In some cases that may be true, but this fall look for longer skirts with great tailoring, sheath dresses with darts, pintucks and folds (to gracefully accentuate the female form) and kitten heels with trapezoid handbags. This look may feel hard to incorporate to some of us, but pairing some traditional 60’s ladylike chic pieces, such as a shin length full skirt, with a sexy feminine top, like a black cashmere turtleneck will definitely draw attention. Keep this trend modern by the use of accessories and prints this season. Tights, classic ornate jewelry (think gold +pearls) and functional knits are also defining factors in the 60’s ladylike chic trend. I suggest adding at least one of each essential piece to your wardrobe at a time. This means buy at least 1 shin length full skirt, 1 sheath dress, 1 pair of kitten heels and 1 wide waist-cinching belt to your wardrobe this fall!

I am writing so late in the day because I was truly stumped as to what to blog about today. So after a few hours of retail therapy with image consulting clients I decided it is officially time to start my list of the season’s hottest fashion trends for fall! Oh, I know it is still blazing hot outside, but at the least you should be aware of what to keep an eye out for as the weather begins to change. My first pick for this fashion trend countdown is military clothing for women. I know, many of you are thinking this is not a new trend and you are absolutely right!

Military clothing for women has been a hot trend for about the past three seasons. However, the difference this fall is that much focus is given to the structure, detailing, and functionality of jackets in the arena of military clothing.

Military Clothing Trend Tip #1: Army Green is still Smokin’ Hot! That’s right, for the military clothing trend for women, you can stick with the basics in army and olive greens. Just be sure to go big with the details like gold or brass chains and buttons. For an offbeat twist, I like Juicy Couture Striped Military Cardigan.

Military Clothing Trend Tip #2: Go for Cropped & Long Jackets. In your wardrobe this fall, include at least one cropped military jacket and one 3/4 length military jacket. You will be surprised at how versatile these jackets prove to be. For a long trench style of military jacket, my pick is ADAM Military Style Trench Coat

Military Clothing Trend Tip #3: Functionality + Utility are Key. Aviator as well as Army looks of 20th century military are easily fused in this seasons’ collections. Go for pieces with a great cut that specifically work for you! My vote for the best in military clothing that encompasses functionality, utility and style is the Free People Skinny Military Pants. You can throw these pants on with virtually any top and be out the door!

Lesson Learned? Army green is still hot, while detail and length should be embraced as well. And lastly, don’t forget to only buy functional styles that suit you best!

Attack of the Jeggings!

Love jeans? Want the relaxed comfort of leggings? Then try jeggings!

Ok, I know I am being a bit dramatic here, but literally the past few seasons in fashion have felt like they have been absolutely under attack! Attack of the jeggings that is:)

First of all, there are many reasons why I have forgone wearing this style until now, late summer early fall. If you are not in great physical condition, the attack of the jeggings trend is not for you! That may seems harsh, but it’s true. These close fitting body conscious pants are only really a great compliment to an already in shape body (I don’t care what the stylists say!) Next, the attack of the jeggings trend is not something that is very comfortable to wear in hot weather. You will probably want to go with capris or shorts when the weather heats up. Finally, I am just now embracing the attack of the jeggings trend because I really was against wearing a trend, as an adult, that 13 year old little girls could also wear. Happily, I am over that ego trip now:)

So, now you may be wondering what jeggings I do like. Well, that would be one’s with great tailoring, great fit, and ones that 13 year old little girls can’t afford! (Ok, I am not completely over my ego about this fashion trend yet:) Anyway, here are some of my favorite pairs of jeggings for the attack of the jeggings trend!

J Brand Antique Black Low Rise Pencil Leg Jeggings. The fit is very tight tube cut, comfortable like stocking, but these jeggings are mega-comfortable due to stretch. They look hot with with a glamorous tunic, a shirt, a rocky biker jacket or an elegant cashmere sweater.

Gold Sign Dark Blue Slim Leg Stretch Jeggings. The fit of this pair of jeggings is ultra tight tube cut, as comfy as tights and have zip fly with button closure plus stitching detail at the rear pockets. Again this pair of jeggings would look hot with glamorous tunics, rockstar biker jackets, elegant cashmere sweaters.

Lesson In Style: The attack of the jeggings trend needs to be embraced by those who are fit as well as style conscious…period!
